Abstract
Singapore schools are on the way to implement school cleaning. Japanese schools are often quoted when countries implement school cleaning, and there have been organized attempts to apply the “Japanese model of schooling”, cleaning as a major component, in various countries (e.g., Egypt, Mongolia). What is important about the school cleaning model in Japan is that it is simply one element in a larger framework of collaborative student learning. Cleaning is part of a series of activities, such as classroom discussion, school events, serving lunch, to overnight excursions, which are brought together under the framework of Japanese style whole child education—TOKKATSU. This presentation will explain the TOKKATSU framework, and show how cleaning is brought under this framework using video teaching material of Japanese classroom cleaning discussion developed by the project (see note) at the Center for Excellence in School Education, The University of Tokyo
