Abstract
This paper is focused on what standards will be valued when parents select preschool education (including nursery and kindergarten) for their beyond-3-years-old children. In this paper, we consider Japanese case as a benchmark, making a comparison between Japan, South Korea and China by using interviews. Results show that comparing with South Korean case and Chinese case, offers us a better understanding of the characteristics of those standards and things valued by Japanese parents while choosing preschool education for their children. Main results are shown as bellowing: (1) those affiliated kindergartens of private schools (especially those integrate all levels of education) are considered having great educational benefits; (2) Since education system still assumes mothers as housewives, mothers are required to make an either-or decision between children’s education and their own career life; (3) Life in preschools is considered as kind of preparations for further study in primary school, as a result, not only educational functions, but also discipline functions are expected.
